Do People Notice Packaging Details?
When should you invest in the unique shape of your
packaging?Geometric shapes, unusual silhouettes, raised surfaces - all these
things add an innovative touch to the packaging box design. In addition, designing
a new packaging can be time consuming and expensive so it is important to know
all the ins and outs.
Simplicity vs. Creativity
The idea behind the concept "Simplicity versus
Creativity" is the clash between two fundamentally different worlds. While
some designers prefer minimalism , others believe that packaging must be the
flamboyant exhibition of a brand. Both parties have their opinions, which means
that there is no magic recipe and unique, when it comes to packaging design.
Despite this, we can see that some designs work and some do
not. Frankly, the majority fail - moreover, according to a customer
satisfaction survey, only 11% of packs fully satisfy customers. So, that leaves
a lot of room for improvement.
Which Custom Shapes Work?
The most common answer (and probably the one we do not want
to hear) is force - it depends. In fact, we mean that in the end, this is done
on a case-by-case basis. As a result, we analyzed some examples - so, does the
custom form work in each case?
The first project is a honey bottle designed by Tamara
Mihajlović for BeeLoved. Our first impression? We crack! Indeed, the honeycomb
structure integrated into the form is an excellent creative metaphor. In addition,
this highlights the high-end quality of the brand.
However, if you put yourself in the customer's shoes, the
design loses sparkle. The real problem with BeeLoved's packaging solution is
that it is really not practical. Indeed, there are so many random inclinations
in the shape of this bottle, that to finish his honey would become an almost
impossible task.
Otherwise, another packaging design approach is one that
guarantees a superb exposure of the product. For example, YOPE, a PCB (Premium Custom Boxes) customer
recently shared images of their latest range of packaging, made by our cares.
The custom shape is not too fancy, it balances the practicality with the image
of the brand and creativity. In addition, the packaging corresponds to the
design of the product.
Gloji has also designed a fantastic innovation. This 100%
natural juice producer took his slogan at the foot of the letter " the
juice that makes you glow ". Their packaging is a bottle that has the
shape of a bulb. In addition, they included a minimalist label and a customer
experience that is truly out of the ordinary. Compared with BeeLoved's previous
example, Gloji's idea is also practical.
Sometimes the creativity of packaging designers can create
sacred migraines in the logistics department. As in this example of "tea
bags hangers" , a bold project that you can see below. The very idea of
seeing a tea box as a wardrobe is pure genius. Each tea bag becomes "a
garment", which makes the design very cute. Nevertheless, from the point
of view of logistics, this design is nightmarish. Even if we would love to have
one in our office.
Although the form is generally the same, Coca-Cola has tried
several dozen bottle designs. So, this is a great lesson in market research.
Even if you are not a leader in your market, change your packaging box step by
step. For example, if you want to create a cutout in your box, add partitions
inside and tie everything together with a colored ribbon. So, you can be sure
that it will surprise your customers.
What are the lessons to remember? The majority of creative
projects are often not practical. Indeed, it is the fantasy of designers but
they sometimes forget the reality of the market. So, find simple solutions -
create a smart package.
Packaging for Your Company
What are the Dangers of Overzealousness?
Have you ever heard of wrapping rage ? It's important to
know this - especially if you're thinking about creating a crazy-crazy
packaging design. The rage of packaging - as its name suggests - occurs when
the packaging makes the customer furious. Surely, excessive layers or an
improbable shape can cause this (or often because we can not open it ...). Be
that as it may, it's something to avoid, at all costs.
There is another danger much more serious from an
entrepreneurial point of view. Packaging design changes can be expensive and
ineffective. Even if it is part of a larger image change , think carefully
before making any changes. Customers usually pay attention to details. So, if
you have a reputation to preserve, it can be risky to play with.
Let's Recap
After evaluating several examples and understanding the
dangers, we can offer simple rules to follow.Be creative but forget the
practicality. So, avoid exchanging creativity for a practical approach. A
simple, minimalist cardboard box gives you plenty of space for small shades -
you can add ribbon, play with print, etc. Creativity is essential, but that
should not be your main goal.
Customers do not like packaging they can not open
(normal) ! Nobody likes to waste time.
Do your research . As in any
other field, do some extensive research. In addition, you can add the new
features of your packaging step by step - and make it a long-term project.
Thus, you can test the reaction that causes each change and observe the market.
